About Us

Introduction

Transborder Express is notable for several achievements. The business is:

  • one of the oldest passenger transport businesses in the Canberra Region
  • the most experienced rail feeder coach operator in Southern New South Wales
  • the most experienced private sector school bus operator in the Canberra Region

The Williams families of Yass and Canberra, owners of Transborder Express and its predecessors, Yass - Canberra Passenger and Freight Service and Yass - Canberra Coaches, have had over 50 years operating buses and coaches which connect with long distance trains.

Transborder has its direct origins in the business started by Mr Jack Williams, father of the current Managing Director, Max Williams.

Early History

On 1 July 1954 Jack Williams purchased a mail and passenger car service operating between Canberra and Yass. Jack bought an 11 seater International K3 from Pioneer Tours to run the service. He collected the mail off "The South Mail" train at Yass Junction and carried a small number of passengers to and from Yass.

The Yass Junction to Yass Town tram was withdrawn on 17 May 1958 and Jack's new business was successful in providing the replacement VW Kombi mini-bus.

The first large bus, an International AA148 with a 22 seat Syd Wood body was bought new in 1959 to operate a connecting bus service to Canberra off the Intercapital Daylight Express at Yass Junction. This train was operating between Sydney and Melbourne.

Transborder Express was born in 1983 out of another name change from Yass Canberra Coaches. Whilst the trading name of the business has changed over the years and has been progressively shortened, Transborder is proud of its history of continued development in the supply of buses and coaches to Yass Town and Yass Junction and more recently Cootamundra and Canberra stations.

The CounryLink Connection

Transborder operate the Eden and Bombala Countrylink Services for NSW Railcorp through the Jolimont Coach Terminal in Civic.

Two Volvo B12B wheelchair accessible coaches with Autobus bodies were placed into service in 2003 on the above CountryLink contract services, the first such coaches operating into Canberra.

Transborder is also a supplier of coaches to CountryLink for school coach services throughout Southern NSW and in emergency situations. Up to 12 coaches have been recently supplied to CountryLink on a single day: five on regular scheduled services and seven on school services.

Yass - Canberra and Snowy Mountains services

Nowadays, Transborder provides a wide variety of services in addition to supplying services to CountryLink. The Company provides eight services a day on a commuter and shopper service between Yass and Canberra, an extensive school bus network and operates coach services to the Snowy Mountains under its own banner.

A Canberra to Snowy Mountains Express has been operated by Lever Coachlines, a division of Transborder Express, since the winter of 1999. Since June 2003 the Snow Express has been supplemented by a daily May to October Alpinexpress departing Canberra via the Airport to Jindabyne and Thredbo. The Transborder/Lever operation is now the largest provider of scheduled express and charter coaches from Canberra to the Snowy Mountains in winter.

In June 2004 the Alpine Express was extended to operate to and from its own stop at Canberra Airport, seven days a week, May to October.

School Bus services

With over 30 years direct experience in operating school buses, Transborder Express is the most competent private sector school bus operator in the Canberra Region. Contracts are held with the NSW Ministry of Transport, the ACT department of Urban Services and the ACT Department of Education, Youth and Family Services. In excess of 50 schools are serviced in Canberra, Hall and Yass.

School buses operate from:

  • Yass and Murrumbateman to Hall and Canberra
  • Murrumbateman to Yass
  • Wallaroo to Hall and Canberra

Charter service

A large charter coach operation is conducted in the Canberra Region. The average fleet age of TBX 5 Star Coaches is 3 with 3 New Mercedes-Benz Coaches purchased in 2007 and another 2 New Mercedes-Benz Coaches in 2008. All 5 star coaches have seatbelts fitted as original equipment for passenger safety.

Accreditation

Transborder Express Pty Ltd achieved accreditation with the NSW Department of Transport in February 1992, soon after bus and coach operator accreditation was introduced in that state - the first such legislation in Australia:

  • Long Distance, Tourist, Charter and Regular Services 9366

The ACT Department of Urban Services introduced Bus Accreditation in the Territory in 2002 and Transborder Express achieved ACT Bus Accreditation Certificate ACTBS004TC/RR on 25 October 2002.
